Henning Koppel Timeline

Information from Henning Koppel :A Commorative Exhibition Silver for Georg Jensen Silversmithy
and text by Erik Lassen of the Danish Museum of Decorative Arts in Copenhangen

Henning Koppel was not a designer of silver originally. Instead he had studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts under Anker Hoffman, and then after which he went to Paris to the Academie Rancon prior to World War II, where he then escaped from the Nazi occupation by fleeing to Sweden with his family. There he made his living for a short time as an artist for hire before he started to design jewelry in pewter for Estrid Ericson at Svenst Tenn, a high quality housegoods store in Strandvagen, Stockholm, where he was noticed by a member of the Georg Jensen Silversmithy.

In 1945 he had started his work with the Silversmithy, and one of his first pieces was the Ameoba Bracelet, with its freeform links and abstract yet organic design. His future designs have a logical progression from this first form, and can be seen in his three candle candelabra, or some of the bases to his bowls and serving dishes. It should be noted that upon first glance, his designs might seem incredibly strange and abstract, though natural forms abound and associations with the natural world abound as one becomes more familiar with his designs. His works are unique also in that, though they draw from nature for inspiration, they are nothing like the Skonvirke artists of the past, with great acanthus leaves or bunches of grapes.Devoid of much decoration, they resemble also functionalist ideals, despite breaking with the functionalist traditions that preceded.

During the 40's his designs were quite revolutionary and broke with the "architect's silver" traditions that preceded him. In his earlier years, silver was still limited in the post war years, so he was limited to smaller pieces, however as the flow of silver increased, he started working on larger hollowware pieces, and developed a series of pots dishes, and pitchers. In 1961, Henning Koppel had begun to expand once again to other materials and started to work with porcelain and ceramics, designing for Bing and Grondahl, and brought along his sculptural sensibilities with him, creating in his new medium. It wasn't just hollowware and porcelain dishes though that Henning Koppel designed for the table. In his later years he developed a number of flatware patterns, including CaravelStrata, New York, and others.
